Job Summary
The President & CEO serves as chief executive officer of Louisiana Travel Association and, in partnership with the Board, is responsible for spearheading the direction of the Louisiana Travel Association.  Together, the Board and its President & CEO assure Louisiana Travel Association’s relevance to the Louisiana travel industry and work in harmony to advance the mission and vision of LTA on behalf of its diverse constituents. The President CEO serves as the chief lobbyist for the association and speaks on behalf of the Louisiana Travel Industry.

The Board delegates responsibility for management and day-to-day operations to the President & CEO, and he/she has the authority to carry out these responsibilities in accordance with the direction and policies established by the Board.  The President & CEO provides direction on governance enabling the Board to effectively carry out its governance functions.  The CEO will lead the association membership in advocacy, financial prosperity, and educational growth.

Responsibilities

Mission, policy and planning

  • Helps the board determine LTA’s values, mission, vision, and short and long-term goals as he/she advances its three core pillars:  Education; Advocacy; and Marketing
  • Helps the Board monitor and evaluate LTA’s relevancy for Louisiana, its effectiveness and its results
  • Directs and implements a proactive communication program to enhance the reputation of the association and visibility of the industry
  • Keeps the Board informed on the condition of LTA and the important factors influencing it
  • Identifies problems and opportunities and addresses them; brings attention to those that are appropriate for the Board and/or its committees; and facilitates discussion and deliberation
  • Informs the Board, its committees and membership about industry trends, issues, problems, and activities in order to facilitate policy positions related to the day-to-day operation of the Association
  • Keeps informed of developments related to association governance, and funding opportunities for the Association
     

Management and administration

  • Serves as the chief lobbyist for the association and the Louisiana travel industry developing and implementing annual advocacy plans that include goals, activities, materials, and performance indicators
  • Works with Public Affairs/Board Liaison to oversee the legislative communication tools, including, but not limited to VoterVoice and Legiscon
  • Oversees staff and works with Chairman’s Circle members, LOT/OLG and at-large members
  • Develop goals and membership plans for retention and growth of membership.
  • Create and implement long and short-term educational programs for LTA.
  • Manages RFP process for major events, including Louisiana Travel Summit and Annual Meeting
  • Maintains relationship with LOT/OLG through event participation, sponsorship, and partnership follow-up
  • Provides general oversight of all LTA activities, manages the day-to-day operations, and assures smoothly functioning and efficient organization
  • Assures program quality and organizational stability through development and implementation of operating standards and controls, systems and procedures, and regular evaluation
  • Assures a work environment that supports quality staff and volunteers and assures process for selecting, developing, motivating and evaluating staff and volunteers
  • In accordance with Board action, recruits personnel, negotiates professional contracts and sees that appropriate salary structures are developed and maintained within industry standards
  • Specifies accountabilities for staff and evaluates performance regularly
     

Governance

  • Helps the Board articulate its role and accountability of the committees and individual members, and helps evaluate performance regularly
  • Works with the Board Chair to enable the Board to fulfill its governance functions and facilitates the optimal Board performance, committees, and individual Board members
  • With the Board Chair, focusing Board attention on long-range strategic issues by overseeing the development of a long-range strategic plan
  • Works with Board officers and committee chairs to get the best thinking and involvement of each Board member and to motivate Board members to share their expertise
  • Recommends volunteers to participate on the Board and its committees
  • Adheres to the Association’s governance and structure by facilitating and abiding by the Association’s by-laws
 

Financial

  • Promote programs and services of the Association that are produced in a cost-effective manner, while maintaining an acceptable level of quality
  • Oversees the fiscal activities of the organization including budgeting, reporting, and conducting an annual audit
  • Works with Board to ensure financing to support short and long-term goals
  • Maintains working relationship/partnership with the Louisiana Office of Tourism
  • Assures effective revenue streams through membership, partnerships, sponsorships and other sources of income. Helps guide and enable the Board to participate actively in the revenue development process
  • Participates in identifying, cultivating and soliciting member/partner and sponsor prospects
     

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

This is a demanding position based on full responsibility for LTA operations.  Handles detailed, complex concepts and problems, balances multiple tasks simultaneously and makes rapid decisions regarding administrative, operational and policy issues.

Plans and implements programs.  Establishes strong and appropriate relationships with Board, committees, membership, elected officials, volunteers, staff, donors and clients. Develops smooth and constructive relationships with LTA staff, outside agencies, organizations and individuals.  Plans and meets deadlines.  Maintains a flexible work schedule to meet the demands of executive management.  Hours may be long and irregular. 

Conveys a professional and positive image and attitude regarding the Association and the not-for-profit and for-profit sectors.  Demonstrates commitment to continued professional growth and development.

 

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a senior management position.  As chief executive officer, this individual demonstrates critical competencies in four broad categories:  commitment to results, business savvy, leading change, and motivating.
  • Some experience in the field of not-for-profit management and governance, and community relations is preferred.  Some general knowledge of fund development is also preferred.
  • A high level of personal skills is required to make formal, persuasive presentations to groups and to deal effectively with people from all segments of the community.
  • The individual must be comfortable with diversity and respectful of a wide range of faiths, beliefs, and experiences.
  • The chief executive possesses the skills and implements the functions of a leader.  He/she shares Louisiana Travel Association’s values, mission, and vision.  He/she consistently displays integrity, models behavior, develops people, and builds teams.
