Wintry weather can be pretty as a picture, but snow and ice formations can be as dangerous. That added weight on power lines and trees can often make them snap, causing power outages. Being prepared can help keep you safe.
Predicting outages caused by winter storms is challenging. Areas of freezing temperatures and precipitation can vary widely with just a few degrees difference between what’s predicted and what actually happens.
Even if you live in coastal regions where extreme cold is rare, it’s still important to be prepared for freezing weather. Have a kit of basic emergency supplies and a family emergency plan ready as the winter season begins.
Winter storms can bring extreme cold, freezing rain, sleet, heavy snowfall, ice, and high winds. These storms can cause transportation, heat, power, and communication disruptions. They also can close schools, stores, and workplaces.
Winters are getting warmer and shorter because of the climate crisis. But, because a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, heavier snowfalls are more likely to occur.
We can take action to prepare. Prepare now to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your home. Shop for winter storm preparedness supplies at the Red Cross Store
Is your hotel prepared? When preparing for a possible winter storm or freeze, don’t be lead into a false sense of security. Use a checklist to minimize your facilities exposures. Instituting precautions, before, during and after a severe winter storm or freeze-up can help mitigate the severity of the loss as well as enhance the overall safety of the facility.
